Working as a freelancer can be a dream come true. You can set your own hours, find projects you like, work on as many projects as you can get done and make extra income. On the other hand there are some downsides like always having to find work and the lack of benefits that a steady job may grant you, ensuring payment, writing contracts and other administrative issues you don't want to spend too much time worrying about. This is where the Freelancers Union wants to help you.

The Freelancers Union is a website, app and community with resources for freelancers to take care of some of these issues. The union offers discounts on products and services, legal resources, health insurance and other general resources. Unlike most other unions, membership is free and gives you full access to the community of fellow freelancers.

Here's how founder Sara Horowitz explains the mission:

Nearly one in three working Americans is an independent worker. That's almost 54 million people – and growing. At Freelancers Union, we strive to make freelancing better now and in the future through joint benefits, live member events, expert guides, and online networking opportunities.

Freelancers Union gives independent workers a powerful voice through political action, research, and thought leadership. We aim to ensure that independent contractors receive adequate rights, protections and professional benefits.

Members of Freelancers Union play an active role in leading community initiatives and advocacy campaigns.  We’re a community that looks out for one another – and we’re only as strong as our members.

Pave a better freelance future for yourself and for all – join Freelancers Union today.

For most of human history, people lived in a world without news. The concept simply did not exist. The idea of news is really a 19th-century phenomenon, driven first by newspapers, and then by electronic media which brought us radio, then TV and now the web. Now, it seems, we are headed back to a world without news. Not because the technology is not there, but rather because, increasingly, people are no longer interested in news, at least in the way it is packaged now.

What TV News Could Be
February 26, 2024

When television was invented in the 1930s, no one knew what TV news was supposed to look like. The medium had never existed before, and so, like Gutenberg half a millennium, prior, the first creators of TV news had to fall back on a medium with which they were familiar, and that was radio.

Maybe scary stories drive ratings… or maybe they don’t.
