Mise-en-scene can be a confusing topic.  It basically just means everything in the frame and how they interact with each other.  That could be subjects, objects in the background, lighting, shot distance, focus and everything in-between.  It is often viewed as a high-level concept that filmmakers use to sound confusing to non-filmmakers, but actually all the elements of mise-en-scene are very important to how the viewer interprets your shot and your narrative, and can enhance your picture greatly.  Learn about all these elements from this handy infographic:
