Virtual Reality is one of the newest tech and video crazes sweeping the globe.  Media organizations like the New York Times and the BBC have already begun to use VR and 360 degree video in stories, and there is little doubt that they and other companies will expand their usage of VR.

With this new form of visual storytelling, new equipment is starting to hit stores this holiday season.  Camera makers from Cannon to GoPro have all begun to design and market their own cameras capable of shooting in VR.  While this may seem like a distant vision for the future, companies like Ricoh and others have already made it a reality.

The Ricoh camera, the Theta S, recently came out and shoots full HD for VR headsets or 360 play.  The camera is a monolithic shaped device with two camera lenses on either side of the body at the top that both take 180 degree video.  The wi-fi enabled camera, transfers the video to a smartphone app that stitches the video together and allows you to edit and share your video right from the phone.

The camera has a tripod mount for stability, and internal microphones to capture simultaneous audio.

Check out some footage from the Theta S on YouTube.

The camera isa available here for $349.00

When we run our video storytelling bootcamps for TV news organizations, our primary focus is on what we call ‘the viewer experience’. It is a given that the journalism is well researched and accurate, but if no one is watching; if there is no ‘audience engagement’ with the story, then you are in fact showing it to no one, which is tragic, and avoidable.
