Question time

What is the biggest and fastest growing video app onine today?

Hint: It's the fourth most downloaded app in the world, surpassing both Instagram and Snapchat.

Here's another hint - At the end of last year, it was the most downloaded app in the US.

One more: Only two years old, it is now valued at $75 billion, making it more valuable than UBER.

Here's your last chance: It has more than 500 million users.

Give up?

It's Tik Tok.

Still give up?

Tik Tok is a video app, like VINE, except it's a huge success. Like VINE, it's a video app, shot vertically, and each video is supposed to last 15 seconds.

So let's say it is not a place for deep ideas or documentaries.

It has, however, gotten an enormous following. You can lip synch, add stickers, filters and augmented reality.

Like I said, don't ask me.

It is most popuilar in China

Owned by Chinese internet firm Bytedance, the app was first launched in China in 2016 with the name Douyin and grew to 100 million users in the space of a single year, with a billion views daily.

"TikTok has tapped into a successful model of user-generated content by making professional-quality video creation simple and accessible," said Paul Barnes, managing director of analytics company App Annie.

well, that's one way of looking at it.

One thing is for sure - it is 100% User Generated Content - and apparenlty the users are telling us exactly what they like to see.

For most of human history, people lived in a world without news. The concept simply did not exist. The idea of news is really a 19th-century phenomenon, driven first by newspapers, and then by electronic media which brought us radio, then TV and now the web. Now, it seems, we are headed back to a world without news. Not because the technology is not there, but rather because, increasingly, people are no longer interested in news, at least in the way it is packaged now.

What TV News Could Be
February 26, 2024

When television was invented in the 1930s, no one knew what TV news was supposed to look like. The medium had never existed before, and so, like Gutenberg half a millennium, prior, the first creators of TV news had to fall back on a medium with which they were familiar, and that was radio.

Maybe scary stories drive ratings… or maybe they don’t.
